Anne Zahalka Resemblance in Dubai 1

With 129 photographers and 860 photographs, Dubai Photo Exhibition could be overwhelming. On view are works dating back to the mid-19th century, along with contemporary images using the latest digital technology, stunning landscapes, architecture, and documentary photography, haunting portraiture pieces, as well as some photographs that are near abstract in style.

Anne Zahalka (Australia)

The exhibition features works from Zahaka’s 1987 series, “Resemblance,” which she made during a residency at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin. The series of portraits references works by Jan van Eyck and Johannes Vermeer, placing its sitters in Flemish interiors, The photos have the formal elements of compositions from 17th-century Dutch genre painting, and add contemporary anachronisms — headphones, a radio, a watch — that give the images a sense of humor while raising questions on the influence of European cultures.
