SNAPPED!

Street Photography in the Illawarra

An exhibition by Anne Zahalka with Wollongong Art Gallery

27 November 2021 – 1 May 2022

Leading Australian photo-media artist Anne Zahalka is asking residents of Wollongong and the Illawarra to contribute their family street photographs for this unique project.

We are seeking submissions of original prints taken by commercial street photographers from the 1930s-60s who worked the streets, beaches and towns of the Illawarra, photographing people as they posed or passed by. The pedestrian was handed a ticket with the details for where to view and purchase their photograph. These candid portraits were an affordable way to buy photographs of themselves, friends and family in a time before many had personal cameras.

We would be very keen to include any street photographs taken here (or even overseas before citizens migrated to the Illawarra) as the commercial street photographer was ubiquitous worldwide. So look through your personal family albums, biscuit tins and shoeboxes to find these historic postcard size snaps!
