Künstlerhas Bethanien
4 – 10 October 2018
In 1987 I undertook a residency in Berlin at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien. It was my first experience of living alone completely disassociated from language and familiar things.
I enjoyed the anonymity of being a foreigner and found an unexpected comfort at which I could watch and observe. I created the series The Wanderer Upon a Castle Came… using the old gothic building I was living in as an attempt to describe the strangeness of Berlin and my initial feelings of being there. This series was recently presented again in Berlin at the new Künstlerhaus Bethanien, relocated in 2010, as part of the European Month of Photography.
